The Oceania Football Confederation Under 18 tournament has kick started its official programs yesterday afternoon at the Korman Complex.
The first game of the day saw Papua New Guinea playing against Tahiti. Both teams displayed beautiful game of soccer in front of the crowded stadium. PNG took the lead in the first half with a goal from number 7, Jason Wadunah. PNG failed to maintain the lead, seeing Tahiti’s number number 9, Ariiura Labaste coming in to equalize the score sheet before the first half of the game ended. The second half of the game, both teams produced numerous counter attacks but failed to place the ball at the back of the net. With few minutes left before the final whistle, Tahiti’s number 7, Tonitini Chung, sealed the victory for the French side with a goal to grab the first win of the tournament.
The Second game of the day saw the Vanuatu team playing against a tough New Caledonian team. Both teams created massive efforts of counter-attack, however both sides failed to score. New Caledonia’s number 9, Lues Waya, scored NC’s first goal within the first half. Second half of the game, both sides displayed skillful set of soccer. Vanuatu had a lot of opportunities but failed to equalize. NC came in to score another goal within half time. Vanuatu’s number 18, Simione Iwai, came in to score Vanuatu’s only goal in the last three minutes of the game. The final whistle was blown, with NC grabbing its first win of the tournament by beating Vanuatu 2-1.
