Dear Editor,

When I read in the article ‘VT2.4 million From Independence Fund Spent on Jewelleries ‘ (Vanuatu Daily Post 6 October) that to mark Vanuatu’s independence a not inconsiderable amount of the funds for the independence celebration was spent on jewellery for Members of Parliament from the Government and their wives, followed by the ‘Jewellery for Leaders Valued Tokens of Appreciation: DPM’ article yesterday in which the Opposition politicians also clarified that they were not party to this “gift giving” i wondered if that was what independence was about? Local politicians looking after themselves first?

Would our erstwhile colonial rulers have spent public money in that manner?
