I’ve been reading the judgment in the Florence Iaruel murder case, and I’m fighting tears. What that poor little girl underwent in her last moments is agonising just to read about.

I have to express my sincere appreciation to everyone in the Police Force’s Family Protection Unit for their conduct in the case.

I also want to single out the Australian Federal Police members who backstopped this effort. Without their expert assistance provided here and overseas, it would not have been possible to resolve this case so completely. However much we might gripe and moan about how donor money is spent, this is an absolute good.

The use of DNA and other unarguable evidence to bring about a guilty plea provided at least a little solace to the family, who didn’t have to relive their anguish in a long trial. It’s clear from the judgement that Robert would not have pled guilty if he thought he had even a chance of winning this case.

It doesn’t always happen, but yesterday we got justice. And it came about because of the incredible dedication of a few really admirable people.

Thank you. You did right.
