A total of Vt651,130,136 will be presented in parliament for the outstanding salaries of 503 primary and secondary teachers throughout Vanuatu.
Of the 503 teachers, 316 are teaching in 39 primary schools and 187 in 34 secondary schools.
Many of these teachers have been employed for years without a regular salary.
The document for the Vt651 million proposed teacher compensation will be tabled by the Minister of Education and Training, Seoule Simon, once it is endorsed by the Ministerial Budget Committee (MBC).
It has already been approved by the Council of Ministers (COM) before reaching the MBC.
Outstanding salaries issue has been ongoing concerns for teachers in Vanuatu over the past years.
Teacher performance and learning are affected when teachers do not get paid for their year-round job considering the current cost of living.
While the government has struggled to meet the salary and benefits demands for teachers, teacher shortages exist.
Over the past years, the government has been recruiting abroad to fill gaps.
Schools are hiring temporary teachers on contracts to cover vacant positions and are paid on a casual rate.
