The Special Parliament of Timor Leste has awarded Vanuatu with a 20th Anniversary Medal of Popular Consultation, as its appreciation to Vanuatu for supporting and contributing towards the country’s struggle for Independence.
Only two countries that were recipients of this special medal — Vanuatu and Portugal.
Prime Minister Charlot Salwai received the medal from Timor Leste President, Francisco Guterres Lú-Olo last week.
PM Salwai led a delegation to Timor Leste following an invitation from their Special Parliament to partake in the commemoration of Timor Leste’s 20th Anniversary of Popular Consultation.
During their brief visit in Timor Leste, Mr Salwai acknowledged the both countries continue to maintain a strong relationship.
He said Vanuatu would be celebrating its 40th Independence Anniversary next year and leaders of Timor Leste would be expecting an official invitation to be part of this special celebration.
Mr Salwai also expressed appreciation on behalf of Vanuatu to Timor Leste for assisting Vanuatu when it was battered by Cyclone Pam in 2015.
