The national parliament heard yesterday that there is only one police officer on the island of Pentecost.
This police officer is responsible for the 26,000 people on the island.
Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Pentecost MP, Charlot Salwai told parliament that the residence of this sole police officer is appalling and the officer walks on foot to carry out his duties as there is no official police vehicle on the island.
Access to roads is difficult, coastal and land transport are very expensive and walking by foot takes hours and days on road linking north, central and south Pentecost.
“It is fortunate that we have many custom chiefs on Pentecost and they control our people well,” MP Salwai added.
The Minister for Internal Affairs as Minister responsible for police, Ishmael Kalsakau, said the government has just been in power for six months and he will do his best to improve police services on the island of Pentecost.
“This government will furnish the Pentecost Police Post with a vehicle, upgrade and improve police services on Pentecost,” Deputy Prime Minister Kalsakau assured.
Additionally, DPM Kalsakau assured the government will also improve police facilities on Paama and on other islands as required.
