The Minister of Climate Change and Natural Disasters, Bruno Leingkone, is expected to visit the bushfire affected area in West Coast Santo today (Monday).

He will be accompanied by the Manager of Disaster Operations at the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), Peter Korisa, SANMA Provincial Disaster Officer, Kensly Micah, including representatives from the SANMA Provincial Government Council (SPGC), the Departments of Agriculture and Education.

SANMA Disaster Officer Micah said they will be verifying the assessment report that was submitted from the community during the visit and at the same time they will brief the minister on the disaster.

"We were supposed to go to the affected area first to verify the findings of the assessment before we brief the minister, but that did not happen.

"We will make recommendations for response once we confirm the findings," he conveyed.

The initial situation report stated the fire has affected over 200 people from Kerepua village and has destroyed forests, sandalwood trees, gardens and coconut plantations.
