Minister Matai Seremaiah appealing to FAO for help

“We need FAO expertise more than ever in the areas of emergency. Two hours ago my Government made a decision to relocate the population of the entire island of Ambae and we will need the support of the FAO and relevant UN agencies to address the immediate food security, logistics and shelter requirements but also longer term support for rehabilitation of some 14,000 displaced people”.

Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry, Fisheries and Biosecurity, Matai Seremaiah made the appeal at the 34th session of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific was in Nadi, Fiji, from April 9-13.

Representatives from 44 countries participated in the Regional Conference. Observers from non -member nations, international non- governmental organisations and intergovernmental organisation all attended including representatives of other agencies of United Nations.

The Minister was accompanied by Acting Director General of MALFFB, Benjamin Shing and Director of Agriculture and Rural Development, Antoine Ravo.
