China’s Ambassador to Vanuatu, Zhou Haicheng, yesterday presented a cheque of Vt11 million to the Vanuatu Government towards the COVID-19 response.
This is the sixth donation in response to COVID-19 provide by the Government of China to the Vanuatu Government.
The Chinese Ambassador presented the cheque to the Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kalfau Kaloris, witnessed by the Director General of the Ministry of Health, Russell Tamata, and the Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Yvon Basil, and government officials yesterday morning.
“Vanuatu is highly commended for taking active and effective measures to control the spread of virus and remains COVID-19 free.
“This is the sixth donation in response to COVID-19 by the Chinese government to the Vanuatu government, and there will be more in the future,” Ambassador Zhou said.
“This year, the Chinese government and the Vanuatu government stand shoulder to shoulder in fighting against the COVID-19, progressing TC Harold recovery, celebrating Vanuatu’s milestone of 40 years of Independence, and its graduation from the LDC category.
“We share joy and sorrow together. In future, China will keep aiding Vanuatu with a view to ensure its smooth transition to the developing status.
“China will continue to stand together with Vanuatu Government and the people in fighting against COVID-19 to promote public health security, enhance economic and social recovery and development, and promote the ever-growing cooperation under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”
In response DG Kaloris thanked the government and the people's Republic of China for the donation the Vt11 Million towards COVID-19 response.
“The wake of COVID-19 has brought many challenges to our beautiful island nation, however, it is these challenging times that we can test the strength of our friendship and China has always proven to be a true friend indeed to Vanuatu,” he said.
“Vanuatu really appreciates the joint collaboration with China in the fight against COVID-19 to promote public health security, enhance economic and social recovery and development, and promote the ever-growing cooperation under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”
He commended China for assistance provided to Vanuatu in the past and more so during the fight against the pandemic, noting, “China was committed to making COVID-19 vaccine a public good and ensuring its accessibility and affordability in developing countries, including the Pacific Islands, this is a further testament of China’s role and standing as a responsible global leader”.
