Filipino community continues to promote unity

Launching of the Philippines Independence Basketball Tournament in Port Vila

Despite living in another land away from home, the Filipino Community in Port Vila has been gathering together in different social activities to maintain solidarity.

Since 2013, the Filipino Community has been getting together for their Independence Basketball Tournament, an annual program instigated under the leadership of the Philippine Consul in Vanuatu, Florentino Bong Serrano.

The 2015 game openings took place at the Ex-FOL gymnasium recently, the consul has announced.

In his statement, he stated that “the main objective of the tournament is to promote unity among Filipinos in Port Vila”.

At the launching venue, all children, women and men grouped into four teams of Blue, Green, Yellow and White, were called for the ceremonial toss officiated by Consul Serrano. Games begun after the toss.

The sporting program will continue for the several months until June 12, the Philippines Independence Day when the country became independent from Spanish rule in 1898.

Prizes of the winners will be announced to coincide with the Philippine Independence Day Celebrations along with other activities such as dancing competition, usually at the Chinese Club in the heart of Port Vila.

Around 150 Filipinos are residing on Efate and Santo.
