The Family Protection Unit (FPU) in Port Vila has recorded 53 cases altogether in just three months.

From the alarming figure, 35 were related to domestic violence and 18 were sexual violence cases.

The FPU confirmed these cases have been registered with the Prosecution.

One of the findings revealed from these cases were that most suspects have offended while under the influence of marijuana. The Officer in charge of FPU stressed that this is a concern as it creates fear in homes and communities.

In related news, a young man of 22 years was arrested and charged for assaulting his mother with the handle of a rake and a piece of metal at Erakor. Police stated that this incident occurred following the mother's refusal to give him some money. The young man also burned down their family house.

According to police, the 22-year-old was under the influence of marijuana when he committed the crime. He is being charged on five counts in relation to arson and domestic violence.
