Japan and Papua New Guinea both recorded crucial wins in Sano, Japan on day four of the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup East Asia-Pacific
The two teams will face each other in the final game of the tournament in a door- die clash which will see the winner not only crowned champions, but also off to the 2020 ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa.
It was a day for the bowlers for all games at the Sano International Cricket Grounds with one five-wicket haul and two four-wicket hauls.
Fiji’s young team showed enthusiasm and passion throughout their innings
which unfortunately was not enough to hold out Japan’s ever improving bowling attack with Fiji all out in the 27th over for just 91.
Player of the match Yughander Retharekar (5 for 18 off 5.2) tore through the middle order picking up five of Fiji’s last six wickets.
A combination of patience and wayward bowling saw Japan comfortably home in the 24th over for the loss of six wickets.
Meanwhile PNG’s fast bowling attack duo of Sema Kamea (4 for 28 off 9.3)
and Eisa Eka (2 for 17 off 8 overs) were too good again, ensuring that Vanuatu’s chase never really got going.
After winning the toss and batting first, the PNG Garamuts would have been hoping for a lot more than their eventual 177 all out, and if not for some late hitting from player of the match Govea Airi (28 off 34 and 3 for 22 off 5) it could have been a lot worse.
Guba Seura (35 off 29) was the only batter, in either game, to really look
comfortable, hitting five boundaries before going for one too many.
Airi also did damage with the ball picking up three late wickets as Vanuatu was bowled out for just 80.
Today’s results mean it all comes down to the match between Japan and PNG with the home team hoping to see a big crowd cheering them on, with their young stars now just one game away from their first cricket world
