Dear Editor,

It is refreshing to see the photo on the front page of Daily Post Issue no.5405, which shows Lolobinanungwa villagers who hail from West Ambae taking the initiative to relocate to Santo permanently.

They have considered the long-term impacts when they returned to their village after the 2017 evacuation.

Their choice and approach to find a permanent solution with a united front must be applauded.

Often, we wait for what the government and donors can do for us. This is alright but only to a certain extent.

We cannot rely on the government and external assistance forever.

I note there seem to be mixed messages with the current voluntary relocation, many have conveyed their wish to remain on the island.

Many others will be taking up on the government’s offer to resettle on Maewo.

The government has offered options, and it is up to the people to decide.

We have to choose wisely, and we must not also forget that nature is unpredictable.
