Dear Editor,

Randall Trainer would do well to study history.

Regardless of Vanuatu’s desire to remain non-aligned militarily, if a Southeast Asian conflict arose that necessitated shipping access to oil reserves or trade routes (think China instead of Japan this time) then we would be invaded by whoever got here first, not who was invited in by Vanuatu.

Rest assured New Zealand and Australia would rush to help in the event of Chinese aggression but prevention has always been better than cure and an alliance now, with or without a military base, could make the difference between being invaded by friends earlier or by foe later.

As for the US, maybe China is the better option, their record on interference in sovereign nations is a bit better than America’s.

Kind Regards

Pete Wederell
