Dear Editor,

My most heartfelt condolences to the family of Baldwin Lonsdale and the people of Vanuatu.

I am writing to express my great sadness at the passing of President Womtelo Reverend Baldwin Lonsdale, a man of enormous dignity and sincerest faith.

With his death, we have lost a wonderful friend of West Papua, of the people of Vanuatu and the Pacific, and of constitutional good governance.

When some politicians temporized on West Papuan membership in the MSG, the President stepped forward, insisting that the government of Vanuatu must support West Papua in this most important regional body.

When it looked like the government was going to deeply discredit itself during one of the country’s greatest crises, he stepped forward again, re-asserting Vanuatu’s long-held moral compass.

Losing such a man is not easy. He cannot be replaced. Yet knowing Vanuatu as I do, I am sure that his life, his character and his principles will continue to inspire not only those who knew him, but also generations of his countrymen and women to come.

Rest in Peace President Womtelo Reverend Baldwin Lonsdale.

Sincerely,

Octovianus Mote, Secretary General of

United Liberation Movement for West Papua |ULMWP
