The Provincial Health Manager, Simon Saika, has welcomed the tar sealing of the first 250 metres stretch of road saying the completion of the whole road will make the ride more patient-friendly between Lenakel Hospital and Whitegrass Airport during medical evacuations.
He said many mothers have lost their lives in the past just because of the poor road conditions.
Mr Saika also confirmed two deaths recently when two mothers lost their lives upon arriving at the Bauerfield airport in Port Vila.
One of the major reasons was the poor condition of roads that slowed down the ambulance, which means time is consumed in just between the hospital and the airport to get the patient to receive emergency life-saving attention in Port Vila.
The first coating layer of the first 250 metres of the road has attracted villagers around Tanna that want to see to believe.
Along the road curious villagers observe the machines as men in blue uniforms handling the machines are busy to ensure a proper road is constructed.
Some were even heard whispering to each other that “what we were crying for is coming to reality”.
