Solomon Islands Association gears up towards Independence Day celebration
By Glenda Willie

The Solomon Islands Vanuatu Wantok Association is planning to organize a function to mark and celebrate Solomon Islands’ 39th Independence Anniversary in Port Vila.

The aim of the celebration is to bring together all Solomon Islanders, students, families and friends that are residing, working, and studying in Port Vila to celebrate and pay tribute to their forefathers who have struggled for their freedom.

Solomon Islands gained its independence on July 7, 1978 from Britain. This year would mark 39 years of independence and as Solomon Islanders, “we cherished every such moment”, the Solomons citizens in Vanuatu said.

“Solomon Islands and Vanuatu are like brothers and the month of July will be a double celebration for our wantoks since Vanuatu’s Independence Day will also be celebrated on the same month.”

An organizing committee has been set up to oversee the event’s program. Already, the committee has held its first fundraising at the Independence Garden last month that has raised Vt149, 115.

The committee is also planning to organize a “Fun Day” on Thursday 25, which is a public holiday. The Fun Day will be held at the Beach Volleyball Court (at Stade Area).

Whilst it will be a time for Solomon Islanders and families to come together and socialize, funds raised on that day will go towards the independence celebration. As such, the committee wishes to call upon all members living in Port Vila to attend the Fun Day and to be part of the fun.

Penama Province families and friends are also welcome to be part of the fun, the committee said. There will be food and drinks on sale so be prepared to go along with few cash as well. The program will start at 8am and finishes at 4pm.

The Association is also calling on other members living outside Port Vila to start planning and celebrate at their respective locations come July 7. The executive will provide more details on the upcoming events and the actual Independence Day program around June.

The organizing committee wishes to thank all families, friends and students for their support during the first fundraising event, especially those who made donations and pledges.
