The Electoral Commission has confirmed it received candidature forms from six people wishing to contest the Parliamentary by-election for the Port Vila seat left vacant by the death of Opposition Leader and former Prime Minister Edward Natapei in late July. There are two Independent and two women candidates in the group.

The candidates are Alatoi Ishmael Kalsakau – Independent, Nadia Kaneggai – People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Kenneth Natapei – Vanua’aku Pati (VP), Allan Carlot – Natatok, Georgie Calo – Union of Moderate Parties (UMP) and Jocelyn Mete – Independent.

The Electoral Commission says the six candidates fulfilled all the requirements for lodging of candidatures including payment of the candidate fee of Vt100,000 and Vt2000 for the candidate forms and lodging of the forms by 4.30pm on Thursday, September 10.

It says the Commission will meet early next week to screen the candidates. Its decision will be published in the government gazette before the names of the approved candidates is officially declared.

Following that election campaigns will immediately start.
