The Shefa Education Office in Port Vila has embarked on a new initiative to assist school principals in its jurisdiction.
Whether new or old, all principals in SHEFA Province has been reminded on how to lead their schools successfully.
The Shefa Education Office has sent officers to outer islands, starting off with Epi and Tongoa.
The officers will help principals and school councils to better understand their roles and perform better.
They shared insights on successfully running the administration of a school and were reminded to reflect on themselves as leaders with strong leadership skills.
The principals are required to understand the structure of a school, address the needs and concerns of the teachers and staff, as well as deal with challenges in the school.
A common issue in schools in Vanuatu is the lack of untrained principals. There is a shortage of qualified administrators as school principals.
Schools often employ teachers without skills because there are no capable candidates for the position.
Once recruited, these candidates have the choice to either lead or fail their schools. Thus, they are in dire need of training for guidance.
The principal induction program will be rolled out to principals on Emae, Buninga, Mataso, Tongariki and Makira. Another team will visit schools on Efate and in Port Vila.
