The Port Vila Municipal Council will celebrate Port Vila day this year with a difference – all Port Vila Mayors who have served the city since 1975 will be awarded medals of recognition by the Head of State.

Port Vila Mayor, Ulrich Sumptoh said the presentation of these medals will be among the highlights of the ceremony to mark 29 November, when Port Vila celebrates in the heart of the city.

Part of the Kumul Highway from Rumours to the former government building in town will be cordoned off to allow the celebration activities to take place.

There will be a flea market, live music and sports competition.

This year will mark 42 years after Port Vila elected a Mayor into the Town Hall.

Port Vila City had 15 mayors since 1975 with a French national, Remy Delaveuve, as its first Mayor.

There will be an exhibition of photos of mayors and names of the councillors that have served the people of Port Vila since the Condominium government instructed that a Port Vila Municipal Council should be founded in June, 1975.
