Paramount Chief prohibits sale of Pango land

Paramount Chief of Pango village, Rolland Maseiman, has announced a total ban on the sale of land in Pango.

The ban is effective as of July 21, 2018.

The paramount chief’s Law and Order chairman, Collin Ioan Kalwatman, said this excludes existing leases from Elluk plateau all the way to Pango point.

“The paramount chief’s declaration was made during a general meeting at his Farea Siligmol,” Kalwatman stated.

“He made the declaration following growing concerns from the community about the practice of leasing unregistered land to interested individuals, although the land case 03 of 1995 — which covers the Shell Company at Number 2 all the way to Pango Cove is still pending in Court.

“Two months ago, a group of Chinese businessmen were negotiating with relevant tribes within the community to buy 250 hectares of land which covered most of Pango village’s farming areas.

“This forced the chief to declare the ban.”

Mr. Kalwatman said the decision was welcomed with a big round of applause and smiles from the community at the closing of the meeting.
