On Friday 23 November, Australian High Commission’s First Secretary Charlie Jebb officially opened a new environmentally friendly solar water system to Melemaat Primary School.
The Australian-funded solar water system now helps over 600 students, school staff and families access clean water. This installation will change the school community’s everyday life.
“Having access to clean water means children can drink and wash their hands. This will contribute to the health and hygiene of the school’s staff and students, creating a better environment for them to learn. It also means no more lost school days due to water shortages, which is a problem the school faced in the past,” said Charlie Jebb.
The Australian High Commission funded the materials through its Direct Aid Program (DAP). Each year, thousands of Ni-Vanuatu see their lives improved thanks to the support of DAP.
The DAP is designed to address humanitarian hardships in rural and peri-urban communities in Vanuatu. Through the DAP, the Australian Government aims improve the living standards of the people of Vanuatu and promote economic and social development.
