The Opposition bloc has questioned why Prime Minister Charlot Salwai has accepted to go to China

, compromising his leadership position as the country’s Prime Minister, especially on an invitation by the Chinese Communist Party.

In a press statement signed by the Opposition Leader MP Ishmael Kalsakau, the Opposition bloc stated that the Opposition is concerned of the trip to China by Prime Minister, with a delegation following an invitation to the RMC political party.

“Why has the Prime Minister Charlot Salwai Tabimasmas, who is the Prime Minister of Vanuatu accepted to make the trip to China,” the Opposition bloc questioned.

“When he took an oath in Parliament to become Prime Minister, it was to look after the affairs of our nation, to ensure that integrity of the country prevails at all times and respect it and one of the important duties is to serve the interest of the people and the nation of Vanuatu but not just the interest of RMC political party,” the Opposition Leader said in the statement.

He went on to say that, this is not an official trip of the Government and so why the Prime Minister did not appoint another RMC political party to represent him and the party on the trip to China, the Opposition Leader questioned.

The Opposition further questioned that the commitments by the Prime Minister in China, will it be for the people of Vanuatu or just the RMC political party?

“Another big question needed to be answered is, is this a priority for the Prime Minister to leave behind all the national commitments to go on this visit to China as the President of the RMC”? Asked the Opposition Leader.

“We only hope that as the Prime Minister, he will not use his office to use public funds to fund this trip,” stated the Opposition bloc.

The Opposition Leader went on to state: “On top of all these, it would be a conflict of interest if the Prime Minister uses his title to request assistance from China for the party,” said Opposition Leader.

“The population of Vanuatu is not all members of the RMC and Prime Minister must understand that he is not the RMC Prime Minister but the Prime Minister of the people and Vanuatu,” MP Kalsakau said.

“The Office of the Opposition is of the opinion that this shows that Prime Minister lacks understanding of his responsibilities and if this is the case, then he should leave that public office,” Opposition Leader Alatoi Ishmael Kalsakau, stated in the press statement.

“Certainly, this is a ground which the Opposition can rely on to remove him as the Prime Minister,” the Opposition Leader MP Kalsakau, stated.
