A 2-page press release signed by the Leader of the Opposition, MP Ishmael Kalsakau and released to the local media this week alleged that Prime Minister Charlot Salwai was involved in a road accident

in his private vehicle, which reportedly hit a white Double Cabin vehicle, belonging to the Port Vila Municipal and used by Acting Town Clerk Michelle Jonas.

But Public Relations Officer in the Prime Minister’s Office, Hilaire Bule, has denied knowing anything about the accident. He said the Daily Post should check and find out from the Police Traffic Section, if there any report had been filed on the accident and would not comment further.

Police Traffic Section told Daily Post there is no record of a road accident involving, PM Salwai, or the Port Vila Municipality Acting Town Clerk that have been reported to them.

When contacted, the Port Vila Municipal Council authorities neither confirm nor deny the claims by the Opposition Bloc.

The Opposition press release alleged that a road accident occurred on the evening of January 1, 2017 around No. 2 Lagoon. The statement also alleged that the PM Salwai’s private vehicle reportedly hit the Port Vila Municipal Council vehicle but Daily Post could not get independent eyewitnesses on the alleged accident.

The press release by the Opposition bloc alleged that the Municipal Vehicle was not driven by the Acting Town Clerk but by her spouse.

The Opposition asked if the accident occurred as a result of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Opposition bloc questioned why the Port Vila Municipal Town Clerk, as a responsible civil servant did not contact the police traffic section about the alleged accident, if it did occurred.

The bloc also questioned whether it was proper for the Acting Town Clerk to allow her spouse to drive the Municipal’s official vehicle and who will bear the costs of the repair to the vehicle.

The Opposition bloc is calling on the Public Service Commission to take appropriate disciplinary action against the Acting Town Clerk for the alleged road accident.

“No one is above the law, whatever positions they may occupy,” the Opposition bloc stated.

In the meantime, Police from the Traffic Section of the Police Force reiterated that have not receive any report on the alleged accident.Photos of the accident involving the municipal vehicle, have been circulated on social media.
