The Vanuatu Parliamentary Opposition bloc supports the idea by Leader of Solomon Islands Parliamentary Independent Group Dr. Derek Sikua, to change the name Melanesian Spearhead Group(MSG) to Melanesian Economic Forum (MEF).
The Vanuatu Opposition bloc concurs with the view unfortunately, that some member countries are pursuing economic interest at the expense of Melanesia, a statement signed by Opposition Leader MP Ishmael Kalsakau, claims.
“Vanuatu is well aware that MSG founding fathers reflected and agreed on the original principle that freedom and rights of Melanesia from colonial rule and oppression were the fundamental basis of the formation of the MSG Organization. Regrettably MSG is seen to be drifting out from this very purpose thus a name change would deem to be more appropriate as Melanesian Economic Forum (MEF) because that is where the organization is more focused and heading,” Vanuatu Opposition leader says in support of the call by Solomon Islands Parliamentary Independent Group Leader Dr. Derek Sikua, to change the MSG name.
“The Opposition Office notes with concern that MSG should stay focused on its purpose now that the United Liberation Movement for West Papua has submitted its application for full membership within the organization (MSG),” Vanuatu Opposition Leader states.
Daily Post could not get comment from the MSG Secretariat at the time of going to press.
