An accident that occurred yesterday at Rentapau has landed a young driver in critical condition at the Vila Central Hospital (VCH).

He suffered back and spinal cord injuries.

It was alleged that the driver was under the influence of alcohol when driving with colleagues. The vehicle was completely damaged and the locals had to cut the door open to free the trapped driver, according to a source.

The source who is a resident at Rentapau said the vehicle rolled over more than seven metres after failing to turn at the corner before Rentapau Bridge.

Following the accident, Chief Joel Meake from Rentapau, has stressed that the number of accidents occurring on the road from Rentapau to Teouma has increased and therefore, the lives of his people or villagers are at risk.

All drivers are strongly cautioned to take extra care while passing through the residential area.

Drivers are encouraged to driver much slowly and to respect road users.

Rentapau is not a drinking site for the people living in Port Vila, he said.

He stressed that accidents are happening frequently along this road with the recent one happening just last week at Teouma involving a Hyundai bus.

Daily Post was told that the passengers fled the scene after the accident yesterday while the injured driver was taken to the hospital by Pro-Medical ambulance.
