Director Marango calls for tougher regulations on social media

The Director of the Department of Correctional Services, Johnny Marango, has called on the Government to consider imposing tougher regulations on the use of social media.

The call came following a recent post on social media alleging that several detainees have escaped from the High Risk Correctional facility.

Dismissing the post and labelling it as misleading, Director Marango expressed disappointment on the way an individual could disseminate false information to the public.

Director Marango said circulating such sensitive information will not help the situation but cause fear amongst the general public, as the majority of inmates at the High Risk facility are sexual offenders.

He added that these kind of information needed to be verified and confirmed by the Department of Correctional Services prior to posting and approving them on social media.

The concerned Director said there is no control over what is posted on social media and there have already been issues which have led to legal proceedings.
