Over Vt23million fee subsidy was granted for 892 Ambaen students attending schools in the provinces of SHEFA, PENAMA and SANMA, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) confirmed.
The Government announced the fee exemption mechanism for parents on Ambae, who were affected by volcano last year, agreeing to waive tuition fees for Ambae parents in the third term of 2017 and first term of this year, 2018.
School children on Ambae were relocated to other schools in the neighboring islands of Ambae, Pentecost and Santo to sit mock and final examinations when the volcano activity reached the second highest alert last year.
It was agreed that the funds of the fee exemption were to be transferred to the host schools.
According to the MOET, over Vt1million was allocated for schools in SANMA, over Vt21million to schools in PENAMA and Vt900,000 to schools in SHEFA.
Just recently, the Council of Ministers (COM) declared a state of emergency for the whole Ambae Island and agreed for the government to waive tuition fee for parents in the west and south affected by current major ash fall.
Fee exemption will also apply to specific areas on islands that were affected by cyclone Hola as Malekula, Pentecost, Ambae, Ambrym and Malo.
